What exactly are serums, and do I really need to use them in my skincare routine?
Serums, first and foremost, are skincare products that are designed to deliver higher concentrations of active ingredients deeper into the skin. Serums contain between double and triple the normal concentration of ingredients that you find in moisturisers and have much smaller molecules, often delivered in a lightweight texture to reach the skin cells that need the specific ingredients most. This allows serums to be much more targeted, providing faster and more apparent results.
Your skincare regime should include cleansing followed by applying your favourite moisturiser. Serums slot in between cleansing and moisturising, as they need to be able to penetrate the skin to deliver the high concentration of nutrients, and moisturisers inhibit this as they create a protective veil across the skin (hence why they should be last in your skincare routine). Applying a serum will prepare your skin for the richer texture of the moisturiser, allowing its nourishing and protective formula to seal your skin against daily aggressors.
